- Building Community at Curiosity Academy
At Curiosity Academy, we know that learning about community is an important part of early childhood education. Each month, we highlight a character trait that helps children grow socially, emotionally, physically, and morally—guiding them to become kind, responsible, and caring individuals. September’s Focus: Community & Friendship This September, our students explored what it means to be part of a community and how to grow friendships along the way. They quickly discovered that a community isn’t just a place—it’s the people who share, help, and create something special together. 📖 Stories That Inspire We kicked off our learning with books like All Are Welcome and The Dot , which celebrate diversity, creativity, and self-expression. These stories reminded our students that each person’s unique contributions make a community stronger and brighter. 🤝 Learning Through Play Hands-on activities helped bring these big ideas to life: Building stick houses in the woods to practice teamwork and problem-solving. Designing a mini town - complete with a hospital, grocery store, and fire station—and “driving” through town in hula hoop cars while learning safety rules and personal space. Learning about police officers as September’s “community helpers.” Through these playful experiences, the students learned that everyone has an important role in keeping a community safe, happy, and thriving. 🎨 Art That Brings Us Together Our youngest learners explored community through process art, “driving” toy cars to paint colorful tracks around their town. We also celebrated International Dot Day (September 15th)! Each child decorated a dot to represent their uniqueness. When displayed together, the dots created a vibrant tapestry—a beautiful reminder that all are welcome at Curiosity . 🏫 Classroom as Community Beyond these engaging activities, students are discovering that their classroom is its own little community. Each child has a voice, a role, and a chance to contribute to a caring, supportive environment. These early lessons in empathy, teamwork, and responsibility will grow with them for years to come.
- Fall Into Fun: Educational Activities to Do with Your Children
As we welcome the first day of Fall on Monday, September 22nd, the season offers the perfect opportunity to involve your children in activities that are both fun and educational. Celebrate the beauty of the changing leaves while learning through play. Here are a few simple ways to keep your children entertained while supporting their development this fall. 🍂 Nature Scavenger Hunt A nature scavenger hunt is a fantastic way to explore fall’s beauty. Create a list of items commonly found in your area — acorns, colorful leaves, pine cones — and encourage your children to search for these treasures outdoors. This activity nurtures: Observation skills: noticing details in their environment Vocabulary: learning new words connected to nature Physical activity: running, walking, and exploring outdoors 👉 To make it even more exciting, set a timer and challenge your children to see how many items they can collect in 15 minutes! Children exploring the woods, collecting yellow leaves and acorns along the way. 🍁 Leaf Rubbings Collect a variety of leaves from your yard or a local park. Place a leaf under a sheet of paper and use crayons to rub over it. This simple art activity helps children appreciate the beauty of nature while exploring: Leaf shapes and textures Seasonal colors and patterns How different trees contribute to fall’s changes It’s a creative way to blend science, art, and fun. 📚 Fall-Themed Story Time Dedicate time to cozy up with books that celebrate the season, such as Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert or We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger. Reading together supports: Literacy skills: expanding vocabulary and comprehension A love for reading: engaging stories spark curiosity and imagination 👉 Make story time interactive — ask questions, talk about the characters, or act out parts of the book together. 🐦 DIY Bird Feeders Bring wildlife a little closer to your home with easy DIY bird feeders. All you need are pinecones, peanut butter (or a nut-free alternative), and birdseed. Spread the peanut butter on the pinecones, roll them in birdseed, and hang them outside. This activity teaches children about caring for animals while encouraging observation. You can even keep a tally of the different bird species that visit throughout the week! ✨ Embrace Fall Together Fall is a wonderful season to combine fun, creativity, and learning. From scavenger hunts to story time, these activities help your children explore the world around them while building important developmental skills. Most importantly, they give families the chance to spend quality time together and create lasting autumn memories.

- 🍁Fun and Educational Fall Activities for Children
Fall is a wonderful time to engage in activities with children that are both fun and beneficial for their overall development. Here are some of our favorite Fall activities that can help enhance their fine and gross motor skills, as well as foster creativity. Nature Walks & Fall Scavenger Hunts Explore the changing colors of the leaves and discover nature items like acorns, pinecones, and twigs. This activity not only allows children to appreciate the beauty of nature but also develops their observation skills. By observing the colors and textures of nature, children can learn about the changing seasons and the natural world around them. So, the next time you're out for a walk, encourage your child to take a closer look at leaves and collect some nature treasures along the way. Leaf Painting Leaf painting is a fun activity that combines art and nature. It allows children to explore colors, shapes, and textures while sparking their creativity and imagination. To get started, collect leaves during a nature walk or in your backyard. You'll only need a few supplies like leaves, paint, and paper to create unique art pieces. You can also use watercolor, markers, or crayons for leaf printing. Enjoy the process and let your child's imagination run wild! Pumpkin Experiments Science experiments with pumpkins can be a fun and educational way to learn about and understand various scientific concepts. One experiment you can try is the "Pumpkin Volcano" experiment. All you will need is a pumpkin, baking soda, vinegar, dish soap, and food coloring (optional). Carve a small hole in the top of the pumpkin and remove the seeds and pulp. This is a great sensory activity and you can create a sensory bag by putting the seeds and pulp into a ziplock bag. Mix a solution of vinegar, dish soap, and food coloring. Pour the solution into the pumpkin until it is about halfway full. Add a spoonful of baking soda and watch as the pumpkin erupts with a foamy, colorful volcano! Helpful suggestion: Place the pumpkin in a baking tray or do it outside as there may be a big chemical reaction based on the amount of solution and baking soda. Making Pumpkin Spice Scented Play-Doh Playing with Play-Doh is not only fun but is a great way to develop children's fine motor skills and hand strength. By making your own Play-Doh, it encourages children to follow simple step directions and be creative. So, grab the ingredients below and have fun making something new! Ingredients: 1 can of pumpkin 2 cups of cornstarch 1 tbsp of cinnamon Optional sensory play food: Pumpkin seeds, chocolate chips, and sprinkles as fun additions for tactile and edible play! Directions: Mix pumpkin and cinnamon in a medium/large bowl. Gradually add cornstarch until the mixture is doughy, not sticky. Keep refrigerated until ready for play.
